The "Matsumoto Matsuri," a section of the annual Shiminsai (citizens' festival), is loved by the people of Matsumoto as their annual grand celebration of the autumn season.
On the day of the festival, the main venue of Matsumoto Castle's central park as well as the downtown's pedestrian zones become filled with local families, visitors and young people.
Parades such as the "Miss Sister City/Friendship City Parade," "Matsumoto-ondo Parade" and "Mikoshi" float parade marches through the downtown area, which becomes a pedestrian-only zone. Furthermore, 200 boys and girls in medieval warrior attire parade from Matsumoto Castle as past successive castellans.
A large variety of unique events are also held in the city's central shopping street and major stores during the festival.
The warrior procession leaves Matsumoto Castle shortly after noon. Children and adults dressed as medieval warriors, past successive castellans and princesses leave the castle to parade through the city streets. Enjoy this highlight of the festival which attracts many excited viewers.
