This is the grand summer event representative of Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture. The whole city joins in the dance, moving to the catchy phrase "Bon bon Matsumoto bon bon bon". The lyrics come from the Bon bon, the name of a traditional summer ritual for girls in this region.
There are roughly 300 dance groups made up of individual locals and local companies, and over 25,000 people take part in the center city celebration and its samba-like rhythm. Dancers and viewers come together along the streets to forget the summer heat by making their own. There are also judged competitions featuring award shows at the end of the festival.
The unforgettable lyrics and energetic dance are the most attractive element of the Matsumoto Bon Bon. Don't forget to yell "Dokkoi Dokkoi Jinjo" as you move along. The 6.4km long dance course wraps around the Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure.
